Where Do I Start? A Pathway for Autoimmune Healing After Diagnosis
Aug 09, 2025🤦♀️ An autoimmune diagnosis can feel overwhelming—like you’ve just been dropped into a foreign country without a map. I know, because I’ve been there.
👣 the last two decades as a patient advocate and researcher, I’ve learned that there’s an order to healing that makes the journey smoother, faster, and less frustrating. Skip steps, and you risk stalling progress or even making symptoms worse. Follow the right sequence—what I call the SMART Path™—and you give your body the best chance to calm the immune system and start repairing.
The SMART Path™: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Autoimmune Healing
S – Support Drainage & Terrain
Before doing anything else—before detox, supplements, or deep protocols—you make sure your drainage pathways are open. That means supporting the liver, lymphatic system, kidneys, and bowels so your body can actually move waste out.
🔍 Start with testing for key gene mutations (such as MTHFR, COMT, GST, and others) that can cause detox blockages. If your genetic pathways for detox are compromised, jumping into heavy detox can backfire—making you feel worse instead of better. Addressing these roadblocks first helps your body process toxins safely and effectively.
M – Minimize Triggers
Identify and remove the big stressors on your immune system—like inflammatory foods, environmental toxins, and chronic infections. Even small changes here can reduce flares and lower your “immune load.”
A – Assess & Address Deficiencies
Using functional ranges (not just conventional ones), check for nutrient gaps like Vitamin D, B12, magnesium, and iron/ferritin. Filling these gaps is like topping off the fluids in your car—your systems run better when everything’s at optimal levels.
R – Repair the Gut & Immune System
Since 70–80% of the immune system lives in the gut, repairing the gut lining and balancing the microbiome is key. This is where you address leaky gut, SIBO, candida, and other imbalances that keep your immune system on high alert.
T – Targeted Therapies
Once the foundation is in place, targeted therapies—like gentle detox for mold or heavy metals, nervous system retraining, mitochondrial support, or peptide therapy—can make a dramatic difference.
