Alcohol and Autoimmune Disease: What You Sip Could Be Fueling the Fire
Aug 09, 2025
🍷 It's not just a “glass of wine here and there”—it’s biochemistry.
Let’s be real. You’ve cleaned up your diet, you’re working on your stress, you’re borderline best friends with your supplement cabinet… but that evening glass of wine or weekend cocktail still calls your name like a sweet little siren.
💛 I get it. We’ve all been there. And this isn’t about guilt or perfection—this is about information. Because when it comes to autoimmune disease, alcohol isn’t just an indulgence. It’s a chemical wildcard that can throw your healing journey off course in ways that are sneaky, inflammatory, and deeply misunderstood.
Let’s unpack it. ✨
🍸 Alcohol and the Leaky Gut Party You Didn’t RSVP To
Your gut lining is supposed to act like a security gate—keeping pathogens, toxins, and food particles where they belong.
🍷 Alcohol? It acts like a crowbar. Even moderate drinking has been shown to increase intestinal permeability (hello, leaky gut), which is a known trigger and amplifier for autoimmune disease.
Add to that the fact that many autoimmune patients already struggle with gut dysbiosis, histamine intolerance, or sluggish digestion—and alcohol becomes a perfect storm in a cocktail glass. 🍹
🧬 Liver, Please Hold: You’ve Got Another Job
Your liver already has enough to do—detoxing environmental chemicals, metabolizing hormones, processing inflammatory byproducts from your immune system gone rogue… and now you’re handing it a mojito? 🥴
Alcohol adds another layer of burden, forcing your liver to prioritize processing ethanol over everything else—including toxins, estrogen, and even the supplements you’re investing in. That backlog can mean higher inflammation, sluggish bile flow, and hormone imbalances (hi, estrogen dominance).
⚖️ Hormonal Mayhem, Anyone?
Alcohol isn’t neutral when it comes to your hormones.
It can increase estrogen levels (a problem in many autoimmune women), spike cortisol (your stress hormone), and mess with blood sugar and insulin. These shifts aren’t just temporary—they can exacerbate flares, worsen fatigue, and stall healing.
Oh, and if you’re perimenopausal or postmenopausal? The effects hit harder and linger longer. So that Sunday brunch mimosa might still be messing with your sleep or inflammation come Monday night. 😬
🍇 But Wine Is “Healthy”… Right?
Let’s talk about the resveratrol myth. Yes, red wine contains antioxidants. But you’d need to drink liters to get a therapeutic dose. By then, the sugar, sulfites, histamines, and alcohol itself have already outpaced any benefit.
🍸 And don’t even get me started on flavored liquors, mixers, and cheap wine with mystery additives. Those can be a chemical dumpster fire for anyone with an autoimmune condition.
😴 The Sleep Sabotage Nobody Talks About
You may think alcohol helps you fall asleep—but it’s wrecking the quality of your sleep.
Alcohol disrupts REM cycles, increases nighttime awakenings, and spikes cortisol in the early morning hours. For autoimmune patients who already struggle with fatigue and poor recovery, this is like slashing your own tires before a road trip. 🚗💨
🌿 So… Do I Have to Quit Forever?
Not necessarily. But here’s the truth: if you’re in an autoimmune flare, actively trying to heal your gut, or working on detox pathways—alcohol is not your friend. 🚫🍹
However, if your symptoms are stable and you want to enjoy an occasional drink, here are a few survival strategies:
✅ Choose clean spirits: Organic tequila or vodka with soda and lime is often better tolerated
✅ Skip the sugar: Avoid mixers, juices, and sweet wines
✅ Support detox: Consider milk thistle, NAC, or glutathione beforehand (check with your practitioner)
✅ Hydrate like a pro: Drink water between each alcoholic beverage 💧
✅ Time it right: Don’t drink on an empty stomach, and avoid alcohol late at night
✅ Know your threshold: One person’s “okay” might be another’s autoimmune trigger
💛 Why This Matters to Me
As a patient advocate for over two decades, I’ve seen countless people plateau in their healing journey simply because no one ever talked to them about alcohol. I’m not here to take away your fun—I’m here to protect your progress.
I know, I know—I’ve often posted pictures of my favorite cosmopolitan out on the deck. 🍸 But I’ve learned the hard way that I need to cut that out, even if I wasn’t overindulging, because it was sabotaging my quest for healing. So, I speak from experience as well.
✨ Sometimes you just want the ritual of getting home after a hard day at work and enjoying a glass of fresh crisp Sauvignon Blanc or an ice‑cold Cosmopolitan—so sometimes I just put water in that same cocktail or wine glass. And you know what? It still serves the purpose of ritual. It’s about the pause, not the poison. 🌿💦
🏷️ The Bottom Line
You don’t need to swear off alcohol forever to be “doing it right.” But you do need to be honest about what it’s doing to your body.
For those of us with autoimmune disease, healing isn’t just about what we add—it’s also about what we subtract.
🍷 So the next time you raise your glass, ask yourself:
👉 Is this helping me heal—or holding me back?
Either way, now you know. And knowledge, as always, is the strongest shot you can take. 💪✨
